Lanternosphaeridium
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Lanternosphaeridium, Morgenroth, 1966a, p.37.
Emendation: Stover and Evitt, 1978, p.168.
Taxonomic junior synonym: Amphorosphaeridium, according to Norvick (1975, p.50) -- however, Stover and Evitt (1978, p.169) retained Amphorosphaeridium.
Type: Morgenroth, 1966a, pl.10, fig.10, as Lanternosphaeridium lanosum.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Morgenroth, 1966]: (Translation: Stover and Evitt, 1978, p. 168):
Description:
The ovoidal capsule consists of two layers of which the inner layer is smooth, the outer one is fibrous. The capsule exhibits a distinct polarity in the longitudinal direction, that comes about through small protrusions or even through particularly enlarged processes. The appendages are formed from the fibres of the outer layer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emended description:
Stover and Evitt, 1978:
Synopsis:
Cysts ellipsoidal; body fibrous and surrounded by a radially disposed, densely fibrous to loosely filamentous sheath, whose outer margin is even or moderately incised or has spinelike projections; paratabulation indicated by precingular, Type P, archeopyle only.
Description:
Shape: Body ellipsoidal.
Wall relationships: Autophragm surrounded by a densely fibrous to loosely filamentous structure.
Wall features: No parasutural features. Autophragm fibrous, not sharply differentiated from surrounding structure; latter consists of radiating, complexly interwoven, densely fibrous to loosely filamentous strands, which form a sheath around the autophragm. Strands relatively long and may be slightly longer at the poles than elsewhere, owing to the presence of slender, occasionally solid protrusions of the autophragm.
Paratabulation: Indicated by archeopyle only.
Archeopyle: Precingular, Type P (3`` only); operculum free.
Paracingulum: Not indicated.
Parasulcus: Not indicated.
Size: Intermediate to large.
Affinities:
Lanternosphaeridium differs from Turbiosphaera in having a fibrous sheath surrounding the autophragm, rather than more or less distinct, relatively wide fibrous processes.
