Taxonomic junior synonym: Membranilarnacia, by implication in Downie and Sarjeant (1965, p.130) who questionably transferred the "type species" of Membranilarnax, Membranilarnax pterospermoides, to Membranilarnacia -- however, Lentin and Williams (1973, p.93) retained Membranilarnacia. Stover and Evitt (1978, p.295) considered Membranilarnax to be an acritarch genus. Sarjeant (1985b, p.149,151–152) considered Membranilarnax to be a skolochorate dinoflagellate cyst. This name was not validly published in Wetzel (1932, p.136), since that author did not provide a description or designate a type, the latter being a requirement at that time under the ICZN

Diagnosis:
Hystrichospheres whose prickly spherical or box-shaped central body supports a fringing, connected outer ornamentation. The processes, usually branched (furcate) at their tips, are either scattered over the entire surface of the inner shell, or are found entirely or at least predominantly in an [?] equatorial zone. Since they (at least the majority of them) are enclosed by the common outer membrane, a `seam sphere` (provided with an equatorial lamella) or a `doublesphere` (one within the other) can result. The outline may in both cases be indented and the outer membrane somewhat folded.

Diagnosis:
Skolochorate, cysts, apparently cryptotabulate, having a dense cover of processes branching at their tips to form trabeculae. The trabeculae unite with those of adjacent processes to produce a close, very small-meshed network enclosing the entire cyst. Central body spheroidal to ovoidal or broadly ellipsoidal; an ectophragm may enclose the spine tips, partially or completely. Archaeopyle apical, type (tA); operculum free.
