Contrary to the opinion of Lentin and Williams (1993, p. 577), this name is validly published since the name of the "type species" is validly published. This generic name was not validly published in Below (1987a, pl.26, fig.d), who did not provide a description.

Diagnosis:
Arrangement of vesicles/plates of the dinoflagellate amphiesma cop, pop, cap, 4`, 6``, 7c, 6```, 2````, as, FM, ls, rs, ps; 1` metaserte; growth type of thecal plates gonyaulacoidal. Cyst habit proximate, cavate, acavate, sphaeroidal, ovoidal, ovaloidal, polyedrical, may have an apical horn, dextrale and sinistral epicyst halfs nearly symmetrically; wall of pedium and luxuria which may be developed as tegillum; smooth or ornamented; non-, partially or complete thecal tabulation reflected; areation formula NR PR/cop, pop, cap, NR`/4`, NR``/6``, Xc/7c, NR```/6```, NR````/2````, NRs/Xs/as, FM, ls, rs, ps; archaeopyle apical, PR+2`+3`+4`; operculum partly foederate, partly solvate, opercular plates secate, general opercular formula (PR+2`+4`)(S)+3`(s).
