Taleisphaera

From Williams et al., 2017:

[Taleisphaera, Duxbury, 1979a, p.201; Emendation: Masure, 1986, p.114.

Tax. sr. syn.: Kiokansium, according to Below (1982c, p.13–15) — however, Lentin and Williams (1985, p.348) retained Taleisphaera.

Type species: Taleisphaera hydra, Duxbury ,1979 (pl.2, figs.1,4)]

Original description: [Duxbury, 1979]:

Description:
Chorate cysts whose bodies may be subpolygonal, ovoidal or ellipsoidal. The body wall is finely perforate and bears numerous solid processes which are proximally flared and distally flared and furcate. Gonyaulacacean reflected tabulation is indicated by process alignment and by proximal connection of processes by low penitabular crests. Individual processes may have faint longitudinal striations. The archeopyle is precingular, formed by detachment of two dorsal plates

Modified description:

Stover and Williams, 1987, p. 211:

Synopsis:
Cysts skolochorate, body subspherical to ellipsoidal; gonyaulacacean paratabulation indicated mainly by solid processes, which are connected proximally by low penitabular ridges, and also by transversely aligned cingular processes; archeopyle precingular, type 2P, apparently 3" + 4"; opercular pieces free.

Description:
Shape: Body subspherical to ellipsoidal.
Wall relationships: Autophragm only.
Wall features: Body with numerous solid processes, most of which arise from low, penitabular ridges; cingular processes aligned in a single transverse row. Body faintly ornamented.
Archeopyle: Precingular, type 2P (apparently 3" + 4"); opercular pieces free.
Paratabulation: Indicated by positions of processes and penitabular ridges; gonyaulacacean, formula not given.
Paracingulum: Indicated by transverse, equatorial row of processes.
Parasulcus: Not expressed.
Size: Intermediate, overall length about 60 to 80 µm.

Affinities:
Taleisphaera is similar to Spiniferites Mantell 1850 emended Sarjeant 1970, from which it differs in having processes arising from penitabular rather than parasutural ridges and in having a 2P archeopyle. Spiniferites has a simple type P archeopyle. In addition, the characteristic trifurcate and bifurcate branching of the process tips of Spiniferites does not occur on the processes of Taleisphaera.
