Original description: [Bucefalo Palliani and Riding, 1998]:

Diagnosis:
Chorate, acavate, gonyaulacacean dinoflagellate cysts with a longitudinally elongate ellipsiodal cyst body. Intratabular processes which are hollow and closed distally arise in straight latitudinal rows from the apical, precingular, paracingular, postcingular, posterior intercalary and antapical paraplate series. Kofoidian paratabuation formula: ?4', 6", 6c, 6"', 1 p, 1 "". Parasulcus not indicated. Autophragm smooth or having low relief ornamentation. Archaeopyle apical, operculum free, compound.

Affinities/Comparison:
Wittnaudinium n. g. differs from Prolixosphaeridium DAVEY et al. 1966 in that the processes are intratabular and arranged in distinct latitudinal rows. Tanyosphaeridium DAVEY & WILLIAMS 1966 is also similar to Wittnaudinium n. g. but may have nontabular processes, which are normally open distally. Bourkidinium MoRGAN 197 5 is another chorate genus with an elongate cyst body, however the apparently nontabular processes are located at the apical and antapical areas. The processes in the superficially similar genus Kaiwaradinium WILSON 1978 are intratabular, however, they are distally open and are not present in the paracingular region. Furthermore, Bourkidinium, Kaiwaradinium, Prolixosphaeridium and Tanyosphaeridium have simple apical opercula. Beaumontella BELOW 1987 differs profoundly from Wittnaudinium n. g. as it has a suessioid paratabulation pattern.
