Originally Canningia, subsequently (and now) Aptea?.
Questionable assignment: Fensome et al. (2019a, p.17).
The name Canningia spongoreticulata was not validly published in Prössl (1990, p.97), since that author did not specify the lodgment of the holotype.
Age: late Albian–middle Turonian.

Diagnosis:
Sphaerical to polygonal cyst with spongious ectophragm, which is supported by a wide-meshed reticulum.
Description:
The two-layered cyst shows a smooth to porous ectophragm. This is supported by a spongious filling which is divided by, also spongious, septae. The arrangement of septae shows a wide-meshed, polygonal reticulum which seems to reflect the following tabulation scheme: 4", 6"", Xc, 6""", 1p, 1"""".
Affinities:
C. spongireticulatum differs from other Canningia species by the distinctive, wide-meshed reticulum. In some cases, the intratabular filling may be destroyed, so that just the reticulum remains.

Prössl (Citation1990, p. 97) provided the following diagnosis and description for this species.
Diagnosis: Spherical to polygonal cysts with a spongeous ectophragm, [formed] by a coarse-meshed reticulum. Description: The two-walled cyst exhibits a smooth or porous ectophragm. This is divided by spongeous … septa. The septal pattern shows a coarse-meshed, polygonal reticulum, which appears to follow the paratabulation formula 4′, 6″, Xc, 6′′′, 1p, 1′′′′. The archaeopyle corresponds to type tA. [Translation; two paragraphs combined]
Although Prössl (Citation1990) mentioned a ‘spongeous’ ectophragm, it seems that the ornament consists of an autophragm bearing an extremely coarse reticulum with high septa. Prössl (Citation1990) interpreted the reticulum as directly reflecting tabulation. Such a morphology fits better with Aptea than Canningia and hence we make the reassignment here. However, the material illustrated by Prössl (Citation1990) seems more bowl shaped than lenticular and the characteristic areoligeracean asymmetry is at best weakly shown; thus, we question the assignment to Aptea.
Stratigraphical occurrence. Prössl (Citation1990) recorded this species from the late Albian to middle Turonian of Saxony, Germany.
