Edwardsiella hastata
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Edwardsiella hastata Morgenroth et al., 2008, p.123–124, pl.6, figs.8–11. Holotype: Morgenroth et al., 2008, pl.6, figs.8–9. Age:
?late Early to early Middle Miocene.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description Morgenroth et al., 2008
Derivation of name: Latin, hastata, carrying lances, with reference to the long and often pointed processes.
Holotype: Pl. 6, Figs 8, 9. Sample KJ-2, si ngle grain slide KJ-2/7.
Paratypes:. Single grain slides KJ-2/5, KJ-2/13, KJ-2/15 KJ-2/16 sample KJ-2; KJ-9/13, sample KJ-9 and KJ-5/1, sample KJ-5.
Type locality: Kali Jaya, Cen tral Java(fext-fig. 4). ?Upper Early.:: Lower Middle Miocene, Age ?N 6, N8 - N10.
Diagnosis: A species of Edwardsiella with the following characteristics: cyst ovoidal, surface smooth to microgranular, a gonyaulacalean tabulation is reflected by smooth septa from which gonal processes arise. Processes long, consisting of three membranous lists which rise from the septa and form the processes over their entire length. Most of the processes are distally pointed, however distally rounded or tapered processes may occur. Archeopyle precingular (3").
Description: The cysts are ovoidal, rarely subspherical. Their surface is smooth, rarely microgranular. Well developed smooth septa, some 5 μm high, reflect a gonyaulacalean tabulation. From the junctions of some plates: long processes arise, formed by three connected lists, which extend from the septa towards the distal part of the processes. On most specimens distally pointed or rounded processes have been observed,
however, specimens with tapered processes also occur. The holoype has seven processes: One prominent apical process and two processes located symmetrically on both sides of the precingular archeopyle (3") on the epicyst, and four processes on the hypocyst.
Dimensions: Length excluding processes,3 0 (50) 52 μm,h olotype 50 μm,w idth excluding processes, 23 (38) 45 μm, holotype 43 μm. Processes 25-50 μm. 12 specimens measured.
Comparison: The new species is distinguishable from the type species Edwardsiella sexispinosum VERSTEEGH and ZEVENBOOM firstly by its well developed reflected tabulation and secondly by the number of processes, which are frequently distally pointed or rounded, rarely tapered. Edwardsiella sexispinosum is characterized by having 6 processes with septa rising to the distal part of the processes giving them a truncated appearance (VERSTEEGH & ZEVENBOOM 1995: 220).
