Original description Duxbury, 2018:

Plate 8, figures 11 – 14, 16
Holotype: Plate 8, Figures 11, 12.
Paratype: Plate 8, Figure 13.

Type Locality: Well 20/01-8 at 6893.70 ft (conventional core chip), lower Valanginian.

Holotype:Well 20/01-8 at 6893.70ft E.F. U37.2. Paratype: Well 20/01-8 at 6883.30ft E.F. O33.3.

Derivation of Name: From the Latin ornatus, richly adorned, ornate – in reference to the coarse surface ornament.

Diagnosis: Aproximate, fairly thick-walled spheroidal dinocyst with a 2-plate precingular archeopyle, here interpreted as 3'' + 4''. The cyst surface is covered with coarse, very low, irregular ornament in the form of coni, verrucae and broad spines. Ornament is usually randomly-distributed but rarely can be broad and intermittently connected, indistinctly outlining the cingulum.

Paratype: 68 × 78 μm.
Overall: 73 (62) 53 μm × 78 (62) 53 μm.
Specimens Measured: 28

Remarks: Gongylodinium ornatum n. sp. is restricted to a very short interval within the lower Valanginian (text-fig. 10). It is similar in size to other Cretaceous species of Gongylodinium but differs in possessing much coarser ornament.
