Lanterna spongiosa
(Plate IV, 7–12)
Holotype: Plate IV, 7–9
Diagnosis: A species of Lanterna with a thick, finely spongeous autophragm divided by unornamented pandasutural bands. Tabulation gonyaulacacean, archeopyle apical, type (tA), operculum free.
Etymology: ‘spongiosa' in reference to the spongeous ornament.
Material: Palynological strew samples; 2878 m, Jansz-1; 3198.2 m, Laminaria-2
Age: Oxfordian (W. spectabilis Zone; Fig. 5).
Lithostratigraphic occurrence: The Frigate and lower Vulcan fms of the Bonaparte Basin. The Dingo Claystone, Jansz Sandstone and Eliassen Fm of the Northern Carnarvon Basin.
Description: A small to intermediate, proximate dinoflagellate cyst with a spherical to subspherical ambitus. The autophragm shows finely spongeous intratabular ornament, 2–4 μm-thick. Unornamented pandasutural bands are thin, <1.5 μm wide, and are more prominent around the cingulum and the adjoining plate margins. Sulcal plates not expressed; a faint flagellar scar may be evident. Tabulation gonyaulacacean of formula:?pr, 4′,?0–1a, 6″, 6c, 6″’, 1p, 1″”,?5–6 s; archeopyle apical, Type (tA), accessory archeopyle sutures of variable length.
Dimensions: (17 specimens measured)
Length with operculum: 52 (55) 57
Length without operculum: 39 (49) 55
Width: 36 (46) 58
Comparison and remarks: Lanterna spongiosa differs from all other species of Lanterna in having a thick spongeous autophragm. The thickness of this spongeous ornament typically obscures the full tabulation and may give the appearance of incomplete tabulation.
