Deltiella punctata

Holotype. Plate 1, figure 10; GSCA slide no. P51240-02 (¼GSCC slide no. P5205-133G), coordinates 10.8-91.4; EF R55/ 2; Nunavut Palaeontology Collection no. NUPB 963; Q section, Twosnout creek, Bylot Island. Bylot Island formation.

Etymology. The epithet is an adjectival derivative of the Latin punctum, meaning small hole, dot, spot, in reference to the ornamentation on the pericyst.

Diagnosis. A cornucavate species of Deltiella with a short, conical, sharply pointed to gently rounded apical horn and variable apical shoulders and antapical horns. The pericyst is punctate or reticulate. The partite paracingulum is often masked by the ornamentation; when visible it is defined by distally smooth ridges.

Comment. The endocyst is generally large and ovoidal and the periphragm generally appressed to the endophragm except in the vicinity of the horns.
Published studies of forms included in Chatangiella but having a thetaform or deltaform archaeopyle and thus possibly assignable to Deltiella punctata if other morphological factors fit, make an assessment of the stratigraphic range of this species difficult. Likewise, as yet unnamed species of Deltiella have been included in Chatangiella, making it impossible to be accurate about the stratigraphic range of Deltiella.

Size. Holotype: pericyst length 100um, pericyst width 51um, endocyst length 47um, endocyst width 47um. Range of four specimens: pericyst length 56–65um, pericyst width 43– 51um, endocyst length 38–47um, endocyst width 40–47um.

Age. Late Coniacian to late Campanian.
