Elytrocysta vermiculata

Holotype. Plate 1, figure 13; GSCA slide no. P42204-02 (¼GSCC slide P5189-25G); coordinates 12.2x92.7; EF intersection of P54 circle with P54/4; Nunavut Palaeontology Collection no. NUPB 966; section 3, Maud Bight, Bylot Island. Bylot Island formation.

Etymology. From the Latin vermiculatus, meaning wormy, worm-like, in reference to the nature of the surface ornamentation on the autocyst.

Diagnosis. A species of Elytrocysta with a distinctly elongate central body, an apical archaeopyle with a single-piece operculum that clearly includes the apical paraplates, and a strongly vermiculate ornamentation. The ectophragm is not always obvious. The anterior margins of the precingular plates clearly reflect the outline of the archaeopyle.

Comments. Cladopyxidium? halembayense bears a superficial resemblance to Elytrocysta vermiculata but is not as strongly elongate and has a reticulate autophragm. Further examination is warranted to determine whether Elytrocysta vermiculata has six or seven precingular paraplates.

Size. Holotype: autocyst length 18um, autocyst width 12um, ectocoel, where visible, less than 2um. Range of six specimens: autocyst length 17–31um, autocyst breadth 11–23um, ectophragm less than 2um.

Age. Late Santonian to late Campanian.
