Odontochitina corpucorna

1961 Odontochitina sp. A of Alberti, p. 31, pl. 96, figs. 3–4.

Holotype. Plate 3, figure 20; GSCA slide no. P51195-05 (¼GSCC slide no. P5205–88H); coordinates 5.490.8; EF W/56; Nunavut Palaeontology Collection no. NUPB 1011; Q section, Twosnout creek, Bylot Island. Bylot Island formation.

Diagnosis. Main body of pericyst and endocyst is more or less circular and generally, but not always; the periphragm and endophragm are closely appressed. Both periphragm and endophragm thin; periphragm almost invariably perforate, with holes of variable sizes. Lateral horn tapering, antapical horn almost conical, perforate. In some specimens, the lateral horn broadens considerably proximally. Archaeopyle always present, margin smooth.

Comments. The combination of a conical antapical horn and sometimes proximally greatly expanded lateral horn and the perforate nature of the periphragm distinguish this species from other species of Odontochitina. Alberti (1961, 31, pl. 9, figs. 3–4) described and illustrated two specimens that he labelled Odontochitina sp. A, which we would assign to Odontochitina corpucorna. He also included in Odontochitina sp. A a specimen (his pl. 6, fig. 5) that we would exclude from Odontochitina corpucorna. According to Alberti (1961), the stratigraphic range of Odontochitina sp. A is Barremian to early Aptian. Odontochitina corpucorna shows some similarity to Odontochitina indegina in terms of the shape of the antapical horn and expanded lateral horn but has a perforate rather than spinose ornamentation and lacks ‘tabulation terraces’ (see Soliman et al. 2024).

Size. Holotype: overall length (excluding apical operculum) 88um, pericyst length 45um, pericyst width 57um, endocyst length 45um, endocyst width 53um, lateral horn length 55um, lateral horn width proximally 10um and distally 1um, antapical horn length 41um, antapical horn width proximally 10um and distally 2um. Range of four specimens: overall length (excluding operculum) 41–88um, overall width (excluding lateral horn) 45–58um, pericyst length 42–53um, pericyst width 44–57um, lateral horn length 47–55um; lateral horn width proximally 5–11um and distally 1–2um, antapical horn length 39–58um, antapical horn width proximally 8–12um and distally 1–2um.

Age. Late Turonian to early Maastrichtian.
