Original description: [Regali et al., 1974] (translated from Portugese):

Hystrichosphaeridium paraensis sp. n. -- Est. XXIII, n.° 6.

Derivation: Species name derived from the state of Pará, Brazil, where it was first found.
Diagnosis: Smooth, spherical central capsule with radially arranged processes, short and thick at the bases, joining at the ends, forming an outer membrane.
Holotype: Type slide no. 489 — Est. XXIII, no. 6.
Size: 60µ in diameter (central body).
Type site: Well 1-APS-1 (Amapá Submarine) 3015-3030 m.
Description: Capsule: Spherical central capsule, 60 to 70µ in diameter. Radially arranged processes, short and thick at the bases, joining at the ends, forming a very thin, smooth outer membrane. Processes 10 to 16µ in height by 8µ in base, with a constriction near the ends. Size ranges from 80 to 102u in diameter, including the processes.
Comparison: Differs from Hystrichosphaeridium ancoriferum Cookson et Eisenack by the presence of a membrane connecting the processes and by having fewer branes than processes.
Distribution: Hystrichosphaeridium paraensis Zone.
Age: Early Miocene.
Occurrence: Continental shelf of Amapá, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Paraná.
