Description: L. machaerophorum v. abortum represents the end member of the arrested development spectrum that is seen in the reduced and narrowing of process lengths. The end point is expressed in L. machaerophorum var. abortum as cysts of typical body diameter (47.6 +/- 6.7 μm, 2370 specimens, Mertens et al., 2012a), with the processes either <1 μm, or with a few long weak processes that are sparsely compressed against the cyst body (Plate I, Fig. 5. These morphotypes were counted separately from the short-spined “ss” and club-shaped process morphotypes.
