Wanaea spectabilis
Wanaea spectabilis (Deflandre and Cookson, 1955) Cookson and Eisenack, 1958; Emendation: Riding and Helby, 2001b, p.43–44.
Originally Epicephalopyxis, subsequently (and now) Wanaea.
Taxonomic junior synonym: Wanaea clathtabilis (name not validly published), according to Riding and Helby (2001b, p.43).
Holotype: Deflandre and Cookson, 1955, pl.3, fig.14
Locus typicus: Era River district, Papua, New Guinea
Stratum typicum: Oxfordian

G.L. Williams short notes on species, Mesozoic-Cenozoic dinocyst course, Urbino, Italy, May 17-22, 1999 - LPP VIEWER CD-ROM 99.5.
Wanaea spectabilis (Deflandre and Cookson, 1955) Cookson and Eisenack, 1958. According to Deflandre and Cookson (1955, p.293), has a marginal band formed by the union of processes connected to one another by their distal extremities in such a way as to form a more or less distinct peripheral network. Woollam (1982) shows the fringe as a relatively narrow lace-like structure with small perforations proximally and distally splitting into processes that are united distally, the fringe having an entire margin. Size: holotype overall 110 by 84 µm, fringe ca. 8 µm.
--------------------------------------------------
Original description: Deflandre and Cookson, 1955, p. 293: Epicephalopyxis spectabilis
Body of organism considerably compressed, irregularly elliptical in outline, membrane thin, 2-layered, outer one smooth, ornamented with a relatively wide lace-like edge. Marginal band formed by the union of processes connected with one another by their distal extremities in such a way as to form a more or less distinct peripheral network.
Dimensions - Type: overall measurements 110x84 µm, lace-like margin c.8 µm.
Original description: Cookson and Eisenack, 1958, p. 57: Wanea spectabilis
When this species was first described, the material available gave only a partial idea of the form of the shell as a whole. Now better preserved examples, isolated from the Omati deposits, have shown that it is widely-cone shaped with a small rounded apex. As noted in the original description, the alcy edging is composed of radially arranged and sometimes bifurcate processes which are distally united.
Fensome, 1981, p. 54
Synopsis of diagnosis: A species of Wanaea with a broadly cone shaped hypotract which is rounded antapically, and characterized by a narrow cingular flange about one fifteenth or less of the overall cingular ddiameter of the cyst. the flange is composed of radially arranged processes, distally connected.
Affinities:
Fensome, 1981, p. 54
This species is characterized by the width and structure of its cingular flange. W. digitata also has a simplee narrow flange, but the radiating processes are not distally connected.
Originally Epicephalopyxis, subsequently (and now) Wanaea.
