Batiacasphaera ovata
Batiacasphaera ovata, Backhouse, 1987
Holotype: Backhouse, 1987, fig.10D
Locus typicus: Perth Basin, Australia
Stratum typicum: Middle Hauterivian
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Backhouse, 1987, p. 215]:
Description:
Medium-sized ovoidal cyst, apex and antapex smoothly rounded.
Autophragm finely granular, 2.5-3 µm thick in the cingular area, thinner and paler towards the apex and antapex.
Archeopyle apical, type [tA]; operculum usually missing. Six precingular paraplates indicated by the shape of the principal archeopyle suture and the short accessory sutures. Other evidence of paratabulation absent. Operculum a simple, low, domed structure.
Dimensions:
Total length of holotype 65 µm, width 46 µm.
Range of length with operculum missing (16 specimens) 57(63)72 µm, width 46(52)60 µm.
Affinities:
Batiacasphaera ovata may be conspecific with some specimens assigned by Burger to Canningia crassicingulata Burger 1980 but its holotype, as illustrated by Burger (1980, fig.4D) has a smoother surface and a more circular outline than B. ovata.
