Valvaeodinium punctatum (Wille and Gocht, 1979) Below, 1987b, emend Below, 1987b. According to Below (1987b, p. 73), Valvaeodinium punctatum has the tabulation formula of pr, 4', 1a, 5", nrc, 5"’, 1"”. The cyst is proximate, acavate, oblong ellipsoidal to cylindrical, size small. The wall is composed of firm pedium, surface scabrate with very low luxuriate coni, tubercles, baculi, and granules in penitabular, intratabular or finite locations, cingulum and sulcus not marked by processes and not indented on the cyst. Archeopyle apical/intercalary, 3' + 1a; operculum solvate, secate, general opercular formula 3's + 1as. V. punctatum differs from V. lineatum in not having scalariform combs or ridges on the adcingular regions and in having a characteristic pattern of dots. Size: length 36-72 µm.
