Achomosphaera cambra
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Achomosphaera cambra, Sah et al., 1970, p.144, pl.1, fig.3.
Holotype: Sah et al., 1970, pl.1, fig.3.
Originally Achomosphaera, subsequently Spiniferites.
Taxonomic senior synonym: Galea (now Spiniferites) twistringiensis, by implication in Jain (1982, p.51), who considered Achomosphaera cambra to be a taxonomic junior synonym (at subspecific rank) of Hystrichosphaera ramosa var. multibrevis (as Spiniferites ramosus var. multibrevis), which is now considered a taxonomic junior synonym (at specific rank) of Galea (now Spiniferites) twistringiensis.
Age: Late Cretaceous.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Sah et al., 1970, p. 144]:
Holotype - Pl. 1, Fig. 3. Size 60x50 μ.
Slide no. 3640.
No. of specimens studied - 11.
Diagnosis - Cysts oval-subcircular, 50-64 x 48-62 μ; archeopyle precingular, simple; processes many, spinose, cingular processes joined together to form a girdle-like appearance; cyst membrane ± laevigate to granulose.
Description - Cysts generally oval with broadly round.ed lateral ends, sometimes folded at the margin. Cingular processes on both sides appear to fuse giving a sinuous outline at the cingular region. Processes up to 12 μ long, at both apical and antapical regions, robustly built, tapering, rarely bifurcating. Cyst membrane 1-1·5 μ thick, mostly laevigate, sometimes granulose. When present grana sparsely distributed.
Comparison - Achomosphaera ramulifera (Deflan.) Evitt (1963) approximates the present species in shape, size and precingular archeopyle but can be distinguished by its bigger processes with bifurcating tips. A. ramulifera var. perforata Dav. & Will. (1966) has also bigger proceses with bifurcating or trifurcating tips. A. operculata appears different in having circular shape and in the absence of a reflected girdle in the cingular region.
