Diagnosis:
Test dorsoventrally compressed body usually folded and with one short, smooth, hollow apical horn horn narrowing towards a blunt tip tip mostly broken, but often terminated by a short, solid, blunt process in perfect specimens cingulum very faint, often not visible archeopyle precingular and hoof shaped surface of body reticulate, covered with 0,5 µm high and equally wide ridges ridges often discontinuous, sinuous, and enclosing 2- to 3 µm wide spaces body wall about 2 µm thick.

Dimensions:
Size range: Total length of the test, including the horn 78(92)99 µm, holotype 87 µm. Total breadth of the test 67(75)84 µm, holotype 73 µm. Length of the body 66(80)87 µm, holotype 77 µm. Length of the apical horn 9(12)14 µm, holotype 10 µm. Width of the apical horn at the base 8(10)12 µm, holotype 9 µm.

Affinities:
Apteodinium reticulatum differs from all other described species of the genus Apteodinium in having a reticulate ornamentation
