Ascodinium stagonoides
Ascodinium stagonoides, Benedek, 1972; Emendations: Benedek and Sarjeant, 1981
Now Senoniasphaera. Originally Ascodinium, subsequently Deflandrea, thirdly (and now) Senoniasphaera.
Holotype: Benedek, 1972, pl.2, fig.12, Benedek and Sarjeant, 1981, Fig.3, nos.1,3
Locus typicus: Toenisberg, Lower Rhine Embayment, Germany
Stratum typicum: Late Oligocene
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Benedek, 1972, p. 10-11]: (Translation: LPP):
Diagnosis:
An Ascodinium species with dorsoventrally flattened, thick-walled inner wall and smooth outer wall. Apex ends in a wide, long, rounded horn; antapical processes strongly developed and with rounded ends.
Description:
The thick-walled inner layer is circular to ellipsoidal and connected to the outer layer dorsally and ventrally. The finger-like apical and antapical processes are nearly of same size.
Archeopyle results from the loss of the apical part, leaving a zigzag suture.
Membrane of the inner wall thick, possibly granular and of yellow-brown color. Outer Membrane relatively thin, pale yellow and transparent.
Dimensions:
Capsule 62(65)70 µm, apical horn 13-15 µm, antapical horns 12-20 µm (3 specimens).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emended description:
Benedek and Sarjeant, 1981, p. 323:
Diagnosis
Cyst circumcavate. Periblast very broadly ovoidal to rounded subpolygonal in ambitus, dorsoventrally flattened, with a strong, rounded apical horn and two comparably strong, rounded antapical horns of almost equal length. Paracingulum faintly marked by ridges and marginal indentation: parasulcus and other paratabulation features not discernible. Endoblast spheroidal to broadly ovoidal, typically slightly broader than long. Periphragm fairly thin, without ornamentation, sometimes folded; endophragm thicker, granulous.
Archaeopyle of combination type, the equivalents of the apical and anterior intercalary plates lifting off as a unit (Type tAtl)
Dimensions:
Holotype - length of periblast 79 µm, breadth 70 µm, length of endoblast 60 µm, breadth 68 µm, length of apical horn 10 µm, length of antapical horns 8.5 µm and 10 µm.
Range of dimensions: overall length of periblast 76-80 µm (mean 78 µm), breadth 60-76 µm (mean 71 µm), length of endoblast 62-70 µm (mean 65 µm), breadth 58-72 µm (mean 69 µm), length of apical horns 13-15 µm, length of antapical horns 12-20 µm. Material: 3 specimens.
