Brigantedinium majusculum, Reid, 1977 ex Lentin and Williams, 1993

This species name was not validly published in Reid, 1977, since the generic name Brigantedinium was not validly published at that time.
Motile equivalent: Protoperidinium shanghaiense Gu Haifeng et al., 2015, according to Gu Haifeng et al. (2015, p. p.49).

Original description: [Reid, 1977, p. 434-435]:

Diagnosis:
Large spherical thick walled cysts with dorsal, intercalary, hexagonal archeopyles. Apical archeopyle suture sub-parallel to the posterior suture which is the longest.
Two long lateral sutures diverge antapically from the apical suture by short converging sutures. Wall with two or three layers, at times a thin outer pellicle, a thick hyaline brown structureless layer and an inner undulating layer.

Description:
A split in one specimen showed the structureless nature of the outer wall, and that the archeopyle sutures are inclined inwardly. A thin outer closely attached pellicle may indicate the position of a girdle. The archeopyle edge is slightly serrated and is outlined by what appears to be a narrow hyaline collar although actually the edge of the thick wall. In plan view the archeopyle has a length/breadth ratio of 0.76. The inner layer may give rise to a negative reticulum beneath the thick outer layer.

Dimensions:
Holotype Test 81x81 µm. Archeopyle 45x23 µm (oblique). Wall 2.9 µm
Range: Test 73x73 - 92x92 µm. Archeopyle 39x32 - 39x23 µm. Wall thickness 2.3 - 5 µm. Number of specimens measured 15.

Affinities:
This species is distinguished from B. simplex which has a similar shaped archeopyle, by its larger size range.
