Spiniferites velatus
Spiniferites? velatus (Clarke and Verdier, 1967) Stover and Evitt, 1978
Originally Nematosphaeropsis, subsequently (and now) Spiniferites?. Stover and Evitt, 1978, considered this to be a provisionally accepted species of Spiniferites.
Holotype: Clarke and Verdier, 1967, pl.10, fig. 2
Locus typicus: Isle of Wight, Culver Chiff; England
Stratum typicum: Santonian
Original diagnosis: Clarke and Verdier, 1967, p.51-52: Nematosphaeropsis velata
A species of Nematosphaeropsis having a thick wall to the main body, an apical archaeopyle and a distinct plate system.
Original description: Clarke and Verdier, 1967, p.52: Nematosphaeropsis velata
Main body round or oval, wall thick (up to 4 µm) showing fine, evenly distributed perforations. Tabulation distinct but there is no obvious girdle present. Plates bordered by very high, almost transparent ledges with a support at each junction which protrudes slightly above the top of the ledge. The distal extremity of the supports (processes) are bifid or trifid and these are connected in a similar manner to those in Cannosphaeropsis.
Dimensions: Holotype: Overall diameter 105 µm, diam. main body 55µm, length of processes + ledge (max.) 32 µm, height of ledges (max.) 20 µm Range: Overall diameter 90-120 µm, diam. main body 45-65 µm length of processes + ledge (max.) 24-36 µm, height of ledges (max.) 17-26 µm.
Affinities:
Clarke and Versier, 1967, p.52: Nematosphaeropsis velata
N. velata differs from the type species in overall size and the height of the ledges.
