Conosphaeridium abbreviatum
Conosphaeridium abbreviatum, Wilson, 1984
Holotype: Wilson, 1984, fig.11
Locus typicus: Te Rata Stream, Raukumara Peninsula, New Zealand
Stratum typicum: Late Santonian-Campanian
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Wilson, 1984, p. 552]:
Description:
Periphragm relatively thin, smooth, and in direct contact with endophragm in the area between processes. Endophragm relatively thick (c. 2 µm) and smooth.
Processes, numbering 20-23, closed distally, open proximally, intratabular, with one process per paraplate. Base of each process invariably thickened and coarsely striate, although wall of remainder of process thin and finely striate.
Paracingular processes typically smaller than other processes.
Paratabulation, as determined from intratabular processes, apparently 3-4", 6", 6-7c, 5""", 1p, 1"""".
Archeopyle fairly small, slightly attenuated; operculum bears one moderately large process.
Dimensions:
Holotype: diameter excluding processes 95 µm x 81 µm, length of processes 6-12 µm. Range (20 specimens): maximum diameter excluding processes 54(75)95 µm, processes 6-15 µm.
Affinities: (p. 554):
Conosphaeridium abbreviatum is distinguished from the type species mainly by having substantially shorter processes; a specimen illustrated as Conosphaeridium cf. striatoconus from Western Australia (Cookson and Eisenack 1969, fig. 2A) appears to closely resemble C. abbreviatum.
