Craspedodinium defloccatum

Craspedodinium defloccatum (Davey and Verdier, 1973) Mehrotra and Sarjeant, 1984

Now Leberidocysta. Originally Hexagonifera, subsequently Thalassiphora, thirdly (and now) Leoeridocysta, fourthly Disphaeria, fifthly Craspedodinium.
Lentin and Williams, 1985, retained this species in Leberidocysta Stover and Evitt, 1978.

Original diagnosis: Davey and Verdier 1973: Hexagonifera defloccata
A species of Hexagonifera having a thick walled, subspherical inner body surrounded by a thin, often extensive outer wall. Both are usually smooth but rarely a minute granulation is present. An apical archaeopyle is always present and is slightly angular; the operculum often remains attached.

Original description: Davey and Verdier 1973: Hexagonifera defloccata
The outer membrane is variably developed, as illustrated by the holotype and paratype, and being very thin is easily distorted. The lateral margins of the inner body are always free from the outer wall and it would appear that the two walls are joined either dorsally or ventrally or both.

Remarks: Davey and Verdier 1973
The overall appearance of H. defloccata sp. nov. strongly resembles H. chlamydata Cookson & Eisenack 1962 but is easily distinguished by its almost complete lack of ornamentation on the inner body wall. H. glabra Cookson & Eisenack 1961 has a smoth but perforate inner body wall; the outer wall of this species also adheres extremely closely to the inner body.
