Ctenidodinium tenellum

Ctenidodinium tenellum Deflandre, 1938

Sarjeant, 1978, after examination of the holotype, considered it "to be of too obscure a character to be a fit basis for a species and to be not a Ctenidodinium, as that genus is presently understood. Hence, I consider that this species name should be allowed to fall into disuse".
Possible tax. sr. synonym of Ctenidodinium sellwoodii (Sarjeant, 1975) Stover and Evitt, 1978 and Ctenidodinium stauromatos (Sarjeant, 1976) Stover and Evitt, 1978, according to Woollam, 1980).
Tax. sr. synonym of Dichadogonyaulax stauromatos Sarjeant, 1976, according to Courtinat, 1989. Lentin and Williams, 1993, for the reasons stated by Sarjeant, 1978, agreed that the name Ctenidodinium tenellum should be allowed to fall into disuse.

Holotype: Deflandre, 1938, pl.9, figs.9-10
Age: Oxfordian
Translation Courtinat, 1989: LPP

Remarks: Courtinat, 1989, p.209
C. tenellum presents a preapical and an anterior intercalary paraplate. The paratabulation in the apical region is type P/C, in the dorsal precingular region typegamma and the antapical paraplate is quadrate and symmetrically arranged.
According to Woollam (1983), D. stauromatos and D. sellwoodii Sarjeant 1975 are synonyms of C. tenellum. This opninion is partially accepted. If the morphological charateristics of D. stauromatos are identical to those of C. tenellum, the description and illustrations of D. sellwoodii do not confirm the synonymy. It seems, howeer, that D. sellwoodii has a psi-type dorsal precingular arrangement.
