Cyclonephelium lemniscatum
Cyclonephelium lemniscatum Stanley, 1965
Now Areoligera. Originally Cyclonephelium, subsequently (and now) Areoligera.
Holotype: Stanley, 1965, pl.24, figs.1-2
Locus typicus: South Dakota, USA
Stratum typicum: Palaeocene
Original description: Stanley, 1965, p.230
Cyst flattened, outline in polar view circular with sculptured elements distributed in equitorial region; diameter 68-79 µm. Cyst wall approximately 0.5 µm thick, surface of shell finely pitted with lumina under 0.5 µm in diameter. Sculpture elements consist of ribbon-like to thread-like elements that are fused with adjacent elements in their central region leaving both the distal and the proximal ends free; length of elements about 25 µm. A more or less distinct opening may be present by the detachment of one end of the cyst (the apical archaeopyle).
Affinities:
Stanley, 1965, p.230: The moderately long ribbon-like sulpture elements readily distinguish C. lemniscatum from other previously described species.
