Saturnodinium perforatum Brinkhuis et al., 1992. According to Brinkhuis et al. (1992, p.246), this species is cingulocavate, and characterized by the irregularly perforate nature of the periphragm. Both the periphragm and endophragm are smooth and thin; the endocyst is subsphericl to ellipsoidal, while the pericyst is subspherical and substantially larger. The pericoel is either of uniform width around the endocyst or slightly reduced towards the dorsal and right lateral margins. The archeopyle is precingular, type 1P, formed by the loss of 3" and has a free operculum. The paracingulum, preserved around the periphery of the cyst, is characterized by two continuous strands that form a distinctly grooved depression. The parasulcus is faintly indicated by a depression on the ventral surface S.perforatum differs from S.pansum by being cingulocavate, by the perforate nature of the periphragm, and by the continuous rims of the paracingulum. It superficially resembles Thalassiphora reticulata. . Size: endocyst length 21-33 µm, width 20-33 µm, pericyst length 60-72 µm, width 48-74 µm.

Original diagnosis: Brinkhuis et al., 1992, p.244
A cingulocavate species of Saturnodinium that is characterized by the irregularly perforate nature of the periphragm. Both the periphragm and endophragm are smooth and thin; the endocyst is subspherical to ellipsoidal, while the pericyst is subspherical and substantially larger. The pericoel is either of uniform width around the endocyst or slightly reduced towards the dorsal and right lateral margins. The archeopyle is precingular, type lP, formed by the loss of paraplate 3" and has a free operculum. The paracingulum, preserved around the periphery of the cyst, is characterized by two continuous strands that form a distinctly grooved depression. The parasulcus is faintly indicated by a depression on the ventral surface.
Dimensions. Endocyst length: 21-33 µm (holotype, 25 µm); width: 20-33 µm (holotype, 22 µm). Pericyst length: 60-72 µm (holotype, 71 µm); width: 48-74 µm (holotype, 51 µm).

Affinities:
Brinkhuis et al., 1992, p. 244: This species differs from Saturnodinium pansum (Stover 1977) comb. nov. by being cingulocavate, by the perforate nature of the periphragm, and by the continuous rims of the paracingulum. It is often difficult to observe the preservation of the paracingulum around the periphery of the cyst without the benefits of SEM images. Under the LM, this species bears a superficial resemblance to Thalassiphora reticulata Morgenroth 1966.
