Cymatiosphaera radiata
Cymatiosphaera radiata O. Wetzel, 1933; emend. Sarjeant, 1985
Tax. sr. synonym of the prasinophyte species Cymatiosphaera (al. Cymatiosphaeropsis) stigmata Cookson and Eisenack, 1958, according to Sarjeant, 1985.
Sr. homonym of the prasinophyte species Cymatiosphaera radiata Yankauskas and Posti, 1976. This was a nomen nudum in O. Wetzel, 1932.
Holotype: O. Wetzel, 1933, pl.4, fig.8
Age: Late Cretaceous
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description [Wetzel, 1933b, p. 27] (translated from German):
Cymatiosphaera radiata n.g. n. sp.
Plate IV, Fig. 8
Diagnosis: Spherical central body with a broad "rim" supported by 8–15 radial bars, which may be indented here or there (due to damage?). The outer outline is otherwise completely round. Brownish color.
Comparable forms.
1903. Trochiscia dictyon (JOERG.) LEMMERMANN, Nord. Plankton, 21, p. 19, Fig. 67.
1904. Pterosphaera dictyon JÖRG. Vol. 4, N, pp. 46 and 47, Plate. LOHMANN, Wiss. Ergb. d. Plankton-Exp. d. HUMBOLDT-Stiftg. v. J. 1889, 7, Figs. 7, 8, and 9.
1911. Pterosphaera dictyon JÖRG. LOHMANN, Eggs and Cysts. Nord. Plankton, 2, pp. 12 and 11, Fig. 8.
Besides pterospheres, the fossils, especially when they have an indentation and are otherwise not perfectly round, resemble rounded peridinia or glenodinia in one of the two polar views.
Dimensions approximately 50 μ : 50 μ : 25 μ (?). The recent pterospheres (see above) are 56–100 μ in size. An estimated 40 specimens observed; first found as fossils (?).
Plate IV, Fig. 8 from Preparation 113 of a glacial erratic flint.
Remark:
"Toothed wheel" (? = Cymatiosphaera radiata n. g. n. sp., forma serrato cyclus n. f.).
Plate IV, Fig. 9.
Small spherical shape with bumps or prongs (at least in the plane of the figure). The outer outline also resembles a gear with blunt projections. The short projections could perhaps (!) be interpreted as supports for an incomplete or as remnants of an otherwise vanished rim.
Assuming this, the fossil could be directly placed here. Cf. note on the "cone sheath," p. 57.
Color: brown.
Dimensions: 44 μ × 40 μ × 25 μ; sphere without bumps approx. 25 μ.
Rarely observed; first found as a fossil (?). Plate IV, Fig. 9 from Preparation 118 of a glacial erratic flint.

Original description [Wetzel, 1933b, p. 27] in German:
Cymatiosphaera radiata n. g. n. sp.
Taf. IV Fig. 8
Vergleichbare Formen.
1903. Trochiscia dictyon (JOERG.) LEMMERMANN, Nord. Plankton, 21, S. 19 Fig. 67.
1904. Pterosphaera dictyon JÖRG. LOHMANN, Wiss. Ergb. d. Plankton-Exp. d. HUMBOLDT-Stiftg. v. J. 1889, Bd.4, N, S. 46 u. 47, Taf. 7 Fig. 7, 8 u. 9.
1911. Pterosphaera dictyon JÖRG. LOHMANN, Eier und Zysten. Nord. Plankton, 2, S. 12 u. 11 Fig. 8.
Vgl. Bemerkung zur ,,Zapfenhülle", S. 57.
Farbe braun.
Maße: 44 μ: 40 μ: 25 μ; Kugel ohne Höcker ca. 25 μ.
Selten beobachtet; zum erstenmal fossil gefunden (?). Taf. IV Fig. 9 aus Präp. 118 eines Geschiebefeuersteins.
