Impletosphaeridium multispinosum
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Impletosphaeridium multispinosum Benedek, 1972, p.31–32, pl.11, fig.11; pl.12, fig.15. Holotype: Benedek, 1972, pl.12, fig.15. Age: middle Oligocene.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Benedek, 1972] (translated from German):
Impletosphaeridium mullispinosum n. sp.
?1969: Gen. et sp. indet. 2. - GOCHT, p. 68, pl. 7, fig. 12.
Derivatio nominis: spina lat. = spine, thorn.
Holotype: The specimen preserved in specimen 534/159 and illustrated on pl. 12, fig. 15.
Paratypes: 751/159, 534/159/2.
Locus typicus: Tönisberg, Lower Rhine.
Stratum typicum: Middle Oligocene.
Diagnosis: A species of the genus Impletosphaeridium with numerous long, pointed, massive (?), but in any case externally closed, processes.
Description: The thin-walled, ovoid capsule is often preserved flattened and therefore exhibits pointed, triangular outlines. No wainscoting was observed, nor can it be interpreted from the spine arrangement. The surface is densely covered with long, probably massive, tapered processes. The bases of the processes are circular. Some of the processes appear rigidly splayed, while others appear elastic and twisted. There is no information about the pylomas.
Comparison: The dimensions of the present specimens are very uniform.
Our species differs from the species "Baltisphaeridum" spinosum (WHITE) in its significantly larger dimensions and also in the development of the processes.
Dimensions: Capsule length 63μ (62μ/65μ), capsule width 48μ (46μ/50μ), process length 12μ-20μ (10 measurements). Number of specimens examined: 29.
