Kiokansium unituberculatum (Tasch in Tasch et al., 1964) Stover and Evitt, 1978. Emended diagnosis of K.polypes (a taxonomic junior synonym) from Duxbury (1983, p.49). Spheroidal dinoflagellate cysts bearing numerous solid processes which flare proximally and are distally flared and furcate, often into several very fine flexuous spines. Paratabulation is absent except where indicated by the archeopyle margin. Archeopyle two-plate precingular. Size: (of K.polypes) overall diameter 52-99um, diameter of central body 33-57 µm, process length 15-25 µm.

Original diagnosis: Tasch, 1964, p.194: Hystrichsphaeridium unituberculatum
Subovate shell characterized by an inner ring of pointed protuberances that arise from a clearly defined inner band terminating in a small knob or neck. Exterior to this band, there is a fringe area, the surface and periphery of which bears flexible, curved, bifurcate or pointed processes.
Dimensions: Holotype: Maximum diameter of shell 46 Ám; maximum diameter of inner band 38 Ám; thickness of inner band 1.5 Ám; length of processes 8-14 Ám; thickness of processes, measured at base 2 Ám; density of processes 1.5 per 5 Ám of edge.
