Original description: [Regali et al., 1974] (translated from Portugese):

Hystrichosphaeridium salvadorensis n. sp. -- Est. XXIII, n.° 1.

Derivation: Species name derived from the city of Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia.
Diagnosis: Central capsule, spherical, smooth, surrounded by a thin membrane, supported by thin radial processes.
Holotype: Type slide no. 100 — Est. XXIII, no. 1.
Diameter 100µ.
Type locality: Well 3-GA-3-SES (Guaricema, Sergipe Submarine) 480-510 m.
Description: Central capsule, spherical, smooth, 60 to 80µ in diameter, surrounded by a smooth, thin membrane, 10µ wide, supported by thin radial processes. Size ranges from 100 to 120µ in diameter, including the membrane.
Comparison: Differs from H. paraensis sp. n. in the smaller size of the processes. Distribution: Proxapertites operculatus and Cicatricosisporites dorogensis Superzones.
Age: Eocene.
Occurrence: Continental shelf of Amapá, Sergipe, and Rio de Janeiro.
