Tenua pilosa ssp. longispinosa
Tenua pilosa ssp. longispinosa (Sarjeant, 1961) Lentin and Williams, 1973
Originally Baltisphaeridium pilosum var. Iongispinosum (an acritarch varietas), subsequently Tenua pilosa ssp. Iongispinosa.
Taxonomic senior synonym (at specific rank): Prolixosphaeridium anasillum, according to Erkmen and Sarjeant (1980, p.64).
Taxonomic senior synonym (at specific rank): Hystrichosphaeridium xanthiopyxides var. granulosum (as Prolixosphaeridium granulosum), according to Sarjeant (1976c, p.19) — however, the taxon is now considered a taxonomic junior synonym (at specific rank) of Prolixosphaeridium anasillum.
Holotype: Sarjeant, 1961, pl.14, fig.8
Age: Early Oxfordian
Original description (Sarjeant, 1961):
Diagnosis: A variety of Baltisphaeridium pilosum having spines between one-quarter and one-third the short diameter of the shell in length.
Remarks: The single specimen dealt with here is in appearance quite distinct from all others seen. The shell shows no signs of breakage; its spines are more than three times longer than those of the figured specimen of B. pilosum and considerably in excess of the range of relatively lengths exhibited. This distinctive specimen from the lower Oxford Clay may well be representative of a species distinct from B. pilosum. However, in the absence of further specimens the making of such a major distinction was not thought justifiable.
