Tectatodinium rugulatum (Hansen, 1977) McMinn, 1988. Diagnosis from Hansen (1977, p.12-13), egg-shaped, thick-walled cysts (4-5 µm). Wall composed of two layers, endophragm and periphragm. Endophragm smooth ca 0.5 µm thick, periphragm 4-5 µm thick seemingly built up by numerous less than 0.5 µm granules giving rise to a spongiose structure. Archeopyle angular with (3-) 5 sides, probably precingular, situated below the less rounded pole of the cysts. Size: holotype 45 x 50 µm, wall 4-5 µm thick. Head (1994a) considered this species to be a possible taxonomic junior synonym of Tectatodinium pellitum.

Original diagnosis: Hansen, 1977, p.12: Xenicodinium rugulatum
Xenicodinium Klement, 1960 with a thick wall and possessing a strongly rugulate surface.
Description: Hansen, 1977, p.12: Xenicodinium rugulatum
Egg-shaped, thick-walled cysts (4-5 µm). Wall composed of two layers, endophragm and periphragm. Endophragm smooth c. 0.5 µm thick, periphragm 4-5 µm thick seemingly built up by numerous less than 0.5 µm granules giving rise to a spongious structure. Archaeopyle angular with (3-) 5 sides, probably precingular, situated below the less rounded pole of the cysts.

Comments: McMinn 1988, p. 152
Tectatodinium rugulatum was originally assigned to Xenicodinium by Hansen (1977). It is transferred to Tectatodinium because it has a distinctively two-layered wall.
Occurrence. Rare in the Tectatodinium regulatum Assemblage (Danian) of the Bonaparte Basin.
Previous records. Danian of Denmark (Hansen, 1977); Danian of Sweden (Kjellstrom & Hansen, 1981).
