Surculosphaeridium alagoense
Surculosphaeridium ?alagoense (Regali et al., 1974, p.290, pl.24, fig.2) Lentin and Williams, 1981, p.270.
Originally Hystrichosphaeridium, subsequently (and now) Surculosphaeridium?.
Questionable assignment: Lentin and Williams (1981, p.270) and Fauconnier and Pourtoy in Fauconnier and Masure (2004, p.519) as a problematic species.
Holotype: Regali et al., 1974, pl.24, fig.2.
Age: middle Eocene–Miocene.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Regali et al., 1974] (translated from Portugese):
Hystrichosphaeridium alagoensis sp. n. -- Est. XXIV, n.° 2.
Derivation: Species name derived from the state of Alagoas, Brazil.
Diagnosis: Smooth central capsule with long radial processes with branched ends.
Holotype: Type slide no. 106. Est. XXIV, no. 2.
Diameter: 53µ, including the processes.
Type locality: Well 3-GA-1-SES (Guaricema, Sergipe Submarine) 600-630 m.
Description: Smooth, spherical central capsule, 30 to 35µ in diameter. Long radial processes, 8µ long by 2µ wide, with three to four branches at the ends.
Comparison: Differs from H. caiobensis sp. n. by the branching of the processes.
Distribution: Cicatricosisporites dorogensis and Echitriletes muelleri Superzones.
Age: Middle Eocene to Miocene.
Occurrence: Continental shelf of Amapá, Pará, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Paraná.
