Subtilisphaera deformans

Subtilisphaera deformans (Davey and Verdier, 1973, p.197) Stover and Evitt, 1978, p.238.

Originally Deflandrea asymmetrica (name illegitimate), subsequently Deflandrea deformans, thirdly Deflandrea daveyi (name illegitimate), fourthly Subtilisphaera asymmetrica (name illegitimate), fifthly (and now) Subtilisphaera deformans.
Deflandrea deformans is the substitute name for Deflandrea asymmetrica Davey and Verdier, 1971, p.39–40, pl.2, figs.4,6 (an illegitimate name).

Holotype: Davey and Verdier 1971, Plate 2, figs. 6
Locus typicus: Cotes Noires de Moeslains, France
Stratum typicum: Middle Albian
Age: Middle Albian

Taxonomica note, Davey and Verdier 1973 , p. 197:
It has kindly been pointed out to the authors, by Dr. A. R. Loeblich Jr. (personal communication), that Deflandrea asymmetrica of Davey & Verdier 1971 is a junior homonym of D. asymmetrica Wilson 1967. This error is here rectified. Deflandrea deforrnans sp. nov. = Deflandrea asymmetrica of Davey & Verdier 1971, P. 39, 40, pl. 2, figs. 4,6.

Original diagnosis: Davey and Verdier 1971, p. 39: Deflandrea asymmatrica
Thin walled cyst with spherical to ovoidal inner body and loosely fitting, smooth to lightly granular outer membrane. Inner body asymmetrically placed within the outer membrane, which is produced into a large apical horn and typically one antapical horn. Cingulum always present, represented by low ridges. Archaeopyle not visible.

Dimensions:Holotype - Paratype - Range
Overall length 58 µm - 71 µm - 58 (71.4) 80 µm
Overall width 43 µm - 40 µm - 40 (46.2) 61 µm

Original description: Davey and Verdier 1971, p. 39: Deflandrea asymmatrica
The inner body is typically attached laterally to one side of the outer membrane, the other side remaining free. The cyst has an asymmetrical appearance since the inner body is not located centrally. The apical horn is a broad prolongation of the outer membrane and is often distorted. In the antapical region the outer membrane is similarly detached from the inner body and forms one, asymmetrically placed, subconical horn. This species is relatively thin walled and the type material does not stain with safranin.

Remarks: D. assymmetrica sp. nov. may be conpared with the genus Dingodinium Cookson & Eisenack 1958. The latter, however, does not possess an antapical horn and the apical horn is typically longer. It may be distinguished from Deflandrea pirnaensis Alberti 1959 by the displaced position of the inner body and the broad apical horn.
