Spongodinium solidum
Spongodinium? solidum Alberti, 1961
Alberti, 1961, questionably included this species in Spongodinium.
Lucas-Clark, 1987, considered this to be a problematic species of Spongodinium.
Holotype: Alberti, 1961, pl.3, fig.18
Age: Late Barremian-Aptian
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Alberti, 1961] (translated from German):
Spongodinium solidum n. sp.
Plate 3, Figs. 17 and 18
Holotype: The specimen preserved in preparation no. A 25 and shown on Plate 3, Fig. 18.
Type locality: Werle Borehole 3.
Type stratum: Lower/Upper Aptian
Diagnosis: Carapace globular to ovoid, with a short, distinct, apical process that is blunt at the end. Epicarpus and hypothecium approximately equal in size. Transverse groove narrow, moderately indented. Carapace covered with numerous small, thorn-like projections that are connected at their free ends. This forms a dense outer network that lies close to the carapace. The carapace is delicately plated.
Additions: Characteristic of the species is the outer network, which lies relatively close to the carapace; its meshes are rounded-pentagonal to hexagonal. A rounded-rectangular emergence hole lies beneath the apex.
Relationships: Distinguished from Sp. delitiense (EHRENB.) DEFI. by the delicate tiling of the carapace, its outline, and the tightly meshed network.
Dimensions of the holotype: Length 75 μ, width 63 μ. In other specimens, the length varies between 67 μ and 88 μ, the width between 58 μ and 72 μ.
Material: Over 40 specimens.
Occurrence: Upper Barreme to Apt (Lower Apt?) of Haverlahwiese, Lower/Upper Apt of the Werle 3 borehole.
