Pterodinium makropterum

Pterodinium? makropterum (Cookson and Eisenack, 1982) Lentin and Williams, 1985

Originally Spiniferites, subsequently (and now) Pterodinium?. At the time of the transfer, Lentin and Williams, 1985 questionably included this species in Pterodinium.

Holotype: Cookson and Eisenack, 1982, pl.7, fig.2
Age: Middle Cretaceous

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Cookson and Eisenack, 1982] (translated from German):

Spiniferites macropterus n. sp.
Plate 7, Figs. 1-3

Type: The specimen shown on Plate 7, Fig. 2, preserved in the Gingin Brook No. 1 specimen.

Diagnosis: Central shell with smooth, smooth-edged, very broad wing ridges.

Relationships: Similar to Sp. cingulatus (O. WETZEL 1933) SARJEANT 1970 = Pterodinium cingulatum (O. WE.) BELOW 1981, but with broader wing ridges. The assignment to Pterodinium is not pursued here.

Material and dimensions: Approximately 5 specimens. Central shell (type): approx. 70 x 67 μm, total approx. 109 x 114 μm. The remaining specimens range in size from approximately 55 x 60 to 60 x 62 μ, or 95 x 100 to 100 x 105 μ.

Remarks: The highly developed wing ridges make the study of the wainscoting difficult. It is therefore necessary to consider not only the type specimen but also the other specimens. The specimens prepared by Dr. Cookson were heavily stained with safranin red. Therefore, infrared photographs had to be taken.

Occurrence: Gingin Brook borehole at 409-414 ft.
