Spiniferites cornutus ssp. opisthophorus
Spiniferites cornutus ssp. opisthophorus (Cookson and Eisenack, 1974) Lentin and Williams 1977
Originally Spiniferites cornutus var. opisthophorus, subsequently Spiniferites cornutus ssp. opisthophorus.
Taxonomic senior synonym (at subspecific rank): Hystrichosphaera cornuta var. cornuta, the autonym (as Spiniferites cornutus subsp. cornutus), according to Below (1982c, p.33).
Holotype: Cookson and Eisenack, 1974, pl.23, fig.1
Age: Paleocene
Original diagnosis: Cookson and Eisneack, 1974, p. 62: Spiniferites cornutus var. opisthophorus
A sub-species of the Sp. cornutus with the following peculiarities: apical horn shorter than in the case of the parent species, processes thin and slightly furcated, frequently with membraneously broadened
ases which, occasionally, can combine themselves to connected, delicate, denticulated lists as, for example in the case of the type-specimen (below the girdle, on the right-hand side in the photograph). Antapical plate bordered by membranes, so that a membranous, approximately four-sided top-piece is formed, the edges of which terminate in "furcation-spines". Girdle and longitudinal furrow distinct; longitudinal furrow very slanted, so that ventrally, the girdle extremities are displaced by about 2 furrow-widths.
Dimensions: Type: shell about 50 x 40 µm, overall about 80 x 54 µm. The length of the shells lies between about 50-62 µm, their breadth between about 40 and 53 µm, the total length between about 76 and 88 µm, and the [total] breadth between 54 and 67 µm.
Occurrence: in the Rivernook Bed and in the Pebble Point Formation of Victoria; Older Paleocene.
