Spiniferites katatonos

Spiniferites katatonos Corradini, 1973

Holotype: Corradini, 1973, pl.25, fig.3a-c
Paratype: Corradini, 1973
Locus typicus: Castel di Casio, Italy
Stratum typicum: Late Cretaceous-Paleocene

Original diagnosis: Corradini, 1973, p. 169
Elliptical central body, larger than long, having a thick and slightly wrinkled surface. Simple, thin and short processes, bifurcated and trifurcated, mostly bifid distally. Renected tabulation 3", 6", 6c, 5""", 1p, 1"""". Plate 6" being generally reduced and triangular. Archeopyle precingular, subesagonal in shape.
Dimensions--Holotype: diameter of the central body 52x44 µm, length of the processes 8-11 µm size of the archeopyle 25x18 µm. Range: diameter of the-central body 40-54x34-44 µm, length of the processes 8-14 µm.

Original description: Corradini, 1973, p. 169
The cyst possesses a thin or slightly granular endophragm and a more or less wrinkled periphragm. The processes have a homogeneous length and are connected by sutural crests, always well developed, which may reach tke extremities of the processes. Reflected tabulation 3", 6", 6c, 5""", 1p, 1"""". Plate 1" is narrow and elongated, occupying the anterior prolongation of the sulcus; plates 2" and 3" instead are quadrangular in shape. Plate 6" is reduced and almost triangular. The cingulum is divided into 6 hexagonal elongated cingular plates. The couples of gonal processes located between adjacent cingular plates are connected by a proximal membrane. Longitudinal furrow well developed and noticeablv larger on the hypotract. Archeopyle precingular, subhexagonal in shape.

Affinities:
Corradini, 1973, p. 169: Spiniferites katatonos differs from the previously described species of the genus in having a central body always more developed in breadth than in length. It is furthermore comparable with related forms of Hystrichosphaera bulloidea Deflandre & Cookson and H. monilis Davey & Williams differing only in the ornamentation of the periphragm and in the particularly well developed sutural crests.
