Spiniferites? maranhensis (Regali et al., 1974) Lentin and Williams, 1981

Originally Hystrichosphaeridium, subsequently (and now) Spiniferites?. At the time of the transfer, Lentin and Williams, 1981, questionably included this species in Spiniferites.

Original description: [Regali et al., 1974] (translated from Portugese):

Derivation: Species name derived from the state of Maranhão, Brazil, where it was first found.
Diagnosis: Smooth, spherical central capsule with funnel-shaped radial processes and fringed ends.
Holotype: Type slide no. 44 — Est. XXIII, no. 3.
Diameter: 60µ, including processes.
Type locality: Well 1-MAS-3A (Maranhão Submarine) 2430-2460 m.
Description: Smooth, spherical central capsule, 35 to 40µ in diameter. Numerous funnel-shaped radial processes, 10 to 12µ long, with characteristic filament-shaped fringed ends.
Comparison: Differs from H. difficile Manum et Cookson by the presence of filaments on the fringes.
Distribution: Steevesipollenites alatiformis Zone to Gnetaceaepollenites diversus Zone.
Age: Albian to Cenomanian.
Occurrence: Maranhão continental shelf and Barreirinhas Basin.
