Spiniferites? maranhensis (Regali et al., 1974, p.291, pl.23, fig.3) Lentin and Williams, 1981, p.263. Holotype: Regali et al., 1974, pl.23, fig.3. Originally Hystrichosphaeridium, subsequently (and now) Spiniferites?. Questionable assignment: Lentin and Williams (1981, p.263). Age: Albian–Cenomanian.

Original description: [Regali et al., 1974] (translated from Portugese):

Derivation: Species name derived from the state of Maranhão, Brazil, where it was first found.
Diagnosis: Smooth, spherical central capsule with funnel-shaped radial processes and fringed ends.
Holotype: Type slide no. 44 — Est. XXIII, no. 3.
Diameter: 60µ, including processes.
Type locality: Well 1-MAS-3A (Maranhão Submarine) 2430-2460 m.
Description: Smooth, spherical central capsule, 35 to 40µ in diameter. Numerous funnel-shaped radial processes, 10 to 12µ long, with characteristic filament-shaped fringed ends.
Comparison: Differs from H. difficile Manum et Cookson by the presence of filaments on the fringes.
Distribution: Steevesipollenites alatiformis Zone to Gnetaceaepollenites diversus Zone.
Age: Albian to Cenomanian.
Occurrence: Maranhão continental shelf and Barreirinhas Basin.
