Meiourogonyaulax caytonensis
Meioutogonyaulax caytonensis (Sarjeant, 1959, p.330-332, pl.13, fig.1; text-fig.1) Sarjeant, 1969, p.14.
Originally Gonyaulax (Appendix B), subsequently (and now) Meiourogonyaulax, thirdly Lithodinia. This species is here retained in Meiourogonyaulax following the retention of the genus by Riding and Helby (2001d, p.81,83). This combination, as a questionable assignment, was not validly published in Sarjeant (1966b, p.146), since that author did not fully reference the basionym.
Holotype: Sarjeant, 1959, pl.13, fig.1; text-fig.1.
Age: Early Callovian.
Original diagnosis: Sarjeant, 1959, p.330: Gonyaulax caytonensis
A species of fossil Gonyaulax having a sub-ovate theca, broader than long, with the tabulation ?4", 6", 6""", 1"""", and without a terminal horn. Longitudinal furrow widening at its posterior end. Sutures ornamented by high, irregularly perforate crests.
Dimensions: Type: length 52 µm, breadth 60 µm, height of crests around 5 µm, width of transverse furrow around 5 µm. The type is of about average dimensions there was some variation in size observable.
Affinities and Remark:
Sarjeant, 1959, p.332: Gonyaulax caytonensis
Gonyaulax caytonensis differs markedly in tabulation and form of crests from all the fossil species so far described. It was referred to this genus despite the absence of aposterior intercalary plate since the tabulation corresponds to that of Diesing"s genus in all other respects and since several fossil species lacking a posterior intercalary plate are already included within the genus.
