Spiniferites speetonensis

Spiniferites speetonensis Duxbury 1980

HoIotype: Duxbury, 1980, pl.1, figs.1,2,4
Locus typicus: Speeton, England
Stratum typicum: Barremian

Original diagnosis: Duxbury, 1980, p.131
A species of Spiniferites with smooth endophragm and periphragm. The main body is ovoidal with the epicyst more tapering and less broadly rounded than the hypocyst. Short gonal (trifurcate) and parasutural (bifurcate) processes are proximally connected by low parasutural ridges. Distally, the processes are most distinctive since each bi- and trifurcation is fairly broad, flat-ended or slightly concave and perforate, sometimes to the extent of small-scale fenestration. Occasionally, a ventral pericoel is observed and this displays a large hole in the periphragm. The archeopyle is precingular (3"). Observed dimensions: Holotype - 70 x 65 µm. Overall - 78(70)59 x 70(60)54 µm.

Affinities:
Duxbury, 1980, p. 131: This species is distinctive in having distally perforate to fenestrate gonal and parasutural processes. Similar process terminations have been observed in Achomosphaera andalousiense from the Miocene.
