Shubikodinium armatum Wiggins, 1973

Tax. jr. synonym of Rhaetogonyaulax arctica (Wiggins, 1973) Stover and Evitt, 1978, according to Stover and Evitt, 1978.

Locus typicus: Alaska
Stratum typicum: Late Tithonian

Original diagnosis: Wiggins, 1973, p.6
Same as for the genus with the following additional description. The cyst wall of this species is characteristically covered with spines and column-like rods which have a slight tendency toward becoming swollen distally. These ornamentation elements range up to 2. 5 µm in length. As noted in the diagnoses of S. acanthocomum and S. setigerum, some of this ornamentation appears to be aligned with the sutural tabulation pattern, which, however, is generally obscured by the higher density of ornamentation on S. armatum. A moderate amount of similarity is exhibited between S. armatum and S. acanthocomum, S. spinulosum, and S. setigerum. All of these species are relatively small in size, and their cyst wall ornamentation elements are, at least to some degree, composed of spines or rods. The general character and density of these ornamentation elements distinctly separate the species. Dimensions: Holotype over-all length 40 µm, over-all width 33 µm transverse furrow width approximately 4-8 µm.
