Same as for the genus with the following additional description. The cyst wall of this species is characteristically covered with small verrucae and spinules. This ornamentation has a higher relief on S. spinulosum than on S. arcticum, and a lower relief than on S. arcticum var. maculatum. S. spinulosum isthinner-walled than S. arcticum var. maculatum, and lacks the epitractal plate-margin thickenings noted in that variety.Dimensions: Holotype- over-all length 46 µm, over-all width 35 µm, transverse furrow width 10 µm.
