Sarjeantia triassica
Sarjeantia triassica Horowitz, 1975, p.25, pl.1, fig.7. Emendation: Fensome and Sarjeant, 1982, p.53–54.
Spore genus.
Taxonomic senior synonym: Aratrisporites fimbriatus Playford and Dettmann, 1965, a monolete spore, according to Conway and Cousminer (1983, p.35). See also Sarjeant, 1988. Re-examination by Fensome and Sarjeant, 1982 indicated that the age of the type material is Late Bathonian.
Holotype: Horowitz 1975, pl.1, fig.7
Locus typicus: Zohar 8 borehole, west of the Dead Sea, southern Israel
Stratum typicum: Late Triassic (Late Bathonian, according to Fensome and Sarjeant, 1982)
Emended diagnosis: Fensome and Sarjeant, 1982, p. 54
Proximate, circumcavate or holocavate. Periblast ovoidal, with apex bearing a broad mamelon; epitract a little smaller than hypotract and slightly tapering, hypotract almost hemispherical. Endoblast of similar shape, but markedly smaller. Surface of periphragm scabrate and bearing a dense cover of very short spines, of length between 1 / 12th and 1 / 15th of the periblast breadth. Their form is always slender and tapering slightly from base to tip; they may be acuminate, oblate or (rarely) capitate. Cingulum relatively wellmarked; other indications of paratabulation very faint or lacking. Archaeopule single-plate precingular (type P); operculum free.
Dimensions: overall length 63 µm. overall breadth 50 µm, length of periblast c. 57 µm, breadth 43.5 µm, length of endoblast 45 µm, breadth 33 µm, length of spines up to 3-5 µm.
Material.--20 specimens. Mean dimensions (according to Horowitz 1975: 25): overall length 70 µm, overall breadth 48 µm.
