Scriniodinium anceps

Endoscrinium anceps (Raynaud, 1978) Jan du Chene et al., 1986

Originally Endoscrinium, subsequently (and now) Scriniodinium. Riding and Fensome (2003, p.13) also proposed this combination. Jan du Chêne et al. (1986a, p.315) indicated that this species was originally included in Scriniodinium; however, the original assignment was Endoscrinium.

Holotype: Raynaud, 1978, pl. 1, fig.17; Jan du Chene et al., 1986, pl.110, figs.6-8

Original description: Raynaud, 1978, p. 392
Diagnosis: Large, ovoidal, cavate cysts. Periphragm thin-walled, sometimes folded, with a strong, but short, broad-based apical horn. Characteristical lateral indentations at the position of the girdle. Endophragm smooth, ovoidal, not extending into the apical horn. Tabulation ill-indicated by low, irregular crests: 4" 6"" 5""" 1pv ? 1"""".
Sizes: holotype: 130 x 90 µm, variation (8 specimens): 144-130 x 104-90 µm.

Affinities:
Raynaud, 1978
E. anceps resembles Scriniodinium crystallinum in its general form, its figure, and the lateral indentations of the periphragm at the position of the girdle. It differs from S. crystallinum by the presence of the tabulation and apical horn. E. anceps differs from E. pharo in the more massive figure of the cyst, and the reduction of the apical horn. In spite of the analogies with the two species, E. anceps forms a stable and well-defined morphological entity.
