Prolixosphaeridium anasillum
Prolixosphaeridium anasilum Erkmen and Sarjeant, 1980
Taxonomic senior synonym: Hystrichosphaeridium xanthiopyxides var. granulosum (as and now Prolixosphaeridium granulosum), according to Lentin and Williams (1993, p.539) — however, this synonymy was based on a mis-reading of Erkmen and Sarjeant (1980).
Taxonomic junior synonym (at specific rank): Baltisphaeridium pilosum var. longispinosum (as Tenua pilosa subsp. longispinosa), according to Erkmen and Sarjeant (1980, p.64).
Holotype: Erkmen and Sarjeant, 1980, pl.4, fig.2; Fauconnier and Masure, 2004, pl.65, figs.1–2.
Locus typicus: Hackness, Yorkshire
Stratum typicum: Late Callovian-late Kimmeridgian
Original diagnosis: Erkmen and Sarjeant, 1980, p. 64
Cyst elongate ovoidal to ellipsoidal, its surface entirely and densely covered with coarse granules. Processes quite numerous (c. 80-100 on complete cyst), flexible and long (in excess of half the cysts shortest cross-measurement); they are broad-based, tapering abruptly above the base and thereafter progressively to their tips. Process tips always closed, typically acuminate, rarely blunt. No direct indication of tabulation, though a cingulum may be faintly indicated. Archaeopyle apical; operculum typically lost, rarely attached.
Dimensions: Holotype: length of cyst (apex lacking) 48 µm, breadth 27,5 µm, length of processes 14-15,5 µm. Paratype: length of cyst (obliquely set) 47 µm, breadth 34,5 µm, length of processes 14-15 µm. Third specimen: length of cyst (apex lacking) 35 µm, breadth 29 µm, length of processes c. 12 µm. Range of dimensions: length of cyst breadth 27,5-34,5 µm (mean 30 µm ), length of processes 12-15,5 µm (mean 14 µm).
