Palaeostomocystis reticulata
Palaeostomocystis reticulata Deflandre, 1937
Originally (and now) Palaeostomocystis, subsequently Cladopyxidium. Marheinecke, 1992 emended the diagnosis of this species and transferred it to Cladopyxidium McLean, 1972. This in effect makes Cladopyxidium a tax. jr. synonym of Palaeostomocystis and means that all the species presently included in Cladopyxidium should be transferred to Palaeostomocystis. Since Marheinecke, 1992 did not state whether he had seen the holotype of Palaeostomocystis reticulata [which J. Jansonius (pers. comm.) considers
is a small acritarch] and since Cladopyxidium is such a morphologically distinct genus, we consider it advisable at this time to retain Cladopyxidium as a separate genus. This specific name was a nomen nudum in Deflandre, 1935, 1936.
Holotype: Deflandre, 1937, pl.12 [al. pl.9], fig.4
Age: Late Cretaceous
