Note: In my opinion, the classification of some subspecies of Spiniferites cornutus is unjustified;
some of these must be assigned to other genera.
1) Spiniferites cornutus (Gerlach 1961) Sarjeant 1970 ssp. aspinatus Cookson & Eisenack 1974 has low parasutural septa like the species of the genus Gonyaulacysta.
2) Spiniferites conutus (Gerlach 1961) Sarjeant 1970 ssp. crassifurcatus Cookson & Eisenack 1974 and Goiniferites cornutus (Gerlach 1961) Sarjeant 1970 ssp. normalis Cookson & Eisenack 1974 is synonymous with Spiniferites cornutus (Gerlach 1961) Sarjeant 1970 ssp. laevimurus (Davey & Williams 1966) Lentin & Williams 1973. Spiniferites cornutus ssp. laevimurus differs significantly from Spiniferites cormutus (Gerlach 1961) Sarjeant 1970 due to its smooth membrane, and is therefore by no means a synonym of this species, as Cookson & Eisenack 1974 write.
3) Spiniferites cornutus (Gitmez 1961) Sarjeant 1970 ssp. opistophorus Cookson & Eisenack 1974 is synonymous with Spiniferites cornutus cornutus.
4) Spiniferites cornutus (Gerlach 1961) Sarjeant 1970 ssp. sinefurcatus Cookson & Eisenack 1974 is synonymous with Spiniferites ramosus (Ehrenberg 1838) Loeblich & Loeblich 1966 ssp. brevifurcatus (Cookson & Eisenack 1974) Lentin & Williams 1977. However, it is also possible that both forms are synonymous with Spiniferites speciosus (Deflandre 1937) Sarjeant 1970; at least, they belong to the range of variation of this species.
